Functional Asymmetry of the Brain in Dichotic Listening!
نویسنده
چکیده
Most of the studies I will be describing have been done with normal subjects, but I want first to review briefly some clinical studies which provide a background for the normal data. This work originated at the Montreal Neurological Institute while I was doing research, with Dr. Brenda Milner, on the functional differentiation of the right and left temporal lobes. One of the tests employed in investigating deficits associated with temporal-lobe lesions was the Broadbent (1954) technique. Two different digits are presented simultaneously to the two ears through earphones, one digit to the left ear, the other to the right ear. Usually, three such pairs are presented in rapid succession, and at the end of the six digits, the subject is asked to report all the numbers he heard, in any order he likes. The term II dichotic" has come into use to describe the simultaneous presentation of different stimuli to the two ears.

Predicting therapeutic response to secondary treatment with bupropion: dichotic listening tests of functional brain asymmetry.
Studies using neuroimaging, electrophysiologic and cognitive measures have raised hopes for developing predictors of therapeutic response to antidepressants. Pretreatment measures of functional brain asymmetry have been found to be related to response to the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluoxetine. This report examines the extent to which dichotic listening tests also predict clinical...
متن کاملDichotic listening in patients with situs inversus: brain asymmetry and situs asymmetry.
In order to investigate the relation between situs asymmetry and functional asymmetry of the human brain, a consonant-vowel syllable dichotic listening test known as the Standard Dichotic Listening Test (SDLT) was administered to nine subjects with situs inversus (SI) that ranged in age from 6 to 46 years old (mean of 21.8 years old, S.D. = 15.6); the four males and five females all exhibited s...
متن کاملSex differences in handedness, asymmetry of the planum temporale and functional language lateralization.
Many studies have investigated sex differences in language lateralization. Despite the large number of investigations, controversy about the presence of sex differences in lateralization remains. This study aims to provide a complete overview of sex differences in several reflections of language lateralization: handedness, asymmetry of the Planum Temporale (PT) and functional lateralization of ...
متن کاملSymmetry and asymmetry in the human brain
Structural and functional asymmetry in the human brain and nervous system is reviewed in a historical perspective, focusing on the pioneering work of Broca, Wernicke, Sperry, and Geschwind. Structural and functional asymmetry is exemplified from work done in our laboratory on auditory laterality using an empirical procedure called dichotic listening. This also involves different ways of validat...
متن کاملSmoking reduces language lateralization: a dichotic listening study with control participants and schizophrenia patients.
Schizophrenia has been associated with deficits in functional brain lateralization. According to some authors, the reduction of asymmetry could even promote this psychosis. At the same time, schizophrenia is accompanied by a high prevalence of nicotine dependency compared to any other population. This association is very interesting, because sex-dependent effects of smoking in auditory language...
متن کاملAbnormal functional brain asymmetry in depression: evidence of biologic commonality between major depression and dysthymia.
Prior studies have found abnormalities of functional brain asymmetry in patients having a major depressive disorder (MDD). This study aimed to replicate findings of reduced right hemisphere advantage for perceiving dichotic complex tones in depressed patients, and to determine whether patients having "pure" dysthymia show the same abnormality of perceptual asymmetry as MDD. It also examined gen...
